Brother Can You Spare a……..Baby?

Posted by realityrounds on July 9, 2009

I am going against all conventional wisdom that says birth rates decrease during a recession.  I am unequivocally, unscientifically, and anecdotally saying, “no, no, no.”

Birth rates are going up during this bad boy recession.  It makes sense.  What else is there to do if you have no job, can’t go shopping, and can’t afford to summer in Paris?  That’s right, you have a StaySex-cation.

Why am I stating this?  It is because  we have been literally raining babies at work recently.  Seriously, I caught one from the ceiling today.  It has been non-stop amniotic fluid, lochia, placentas and newborns.  Non-stop.  A Birth Storm.

Anyone else seeing this Birth Storm?  Any recession preggos out there?  I believe babies are good for the economy.  And job security for me.  Keep it up.  Trust me, I will be proven right that the birth rates have gone up this recession.  Check back in 6 months to see if I’m right. :)

LMP 9 months ago early October, conception mid October, maybe pre-election excitment?? LMP mid October EDC late July conception post Election Day “feeling like there is a future”, Just my 2 “midwife” cents…we “SCH Midwives” have 55 due in July, that is A LOT for us….

    • Midwives rock! You may be right about the election excitement. Isn’t that Elizabeth Hasselback from the View pregnant and due soon? 55 babies due in July? I’m tired for you.

I know a ton of pregnant people or those who have just spit out kids. I’m worried it might be contagious ; )

Our hospital has been slow this summer. But my theory is that a whole bunch of Docs and Midwifes had retired or changed professions. So less Docs in Novemeber means they took care of less patients. So I am not totally surprise. It has been kind of nice. For the last 5 years summer work has burnt me out because we don’t staff up for accuity as quickly as we should. And sometimes you just can’t find nurses to come in on their day off.

So I sympathise with your work load. Sending you relaxation vibes since you are probably wicked tired.

  4. We have been busy – very, very busy. Lots of and lots of births. We keep asking “when will it slow down?” and it never seems to slow down.

  5. nothing to add other than I want to say how much I like your blog..humerous without being mean, intelligent without being condescending. I’m a fan.

  6. More anecdotal ammunition about the baby boom. My sisters neighbor is pregnant as was told to go to her area hospital at 2:30 am (!) to be induced for her “big” baby (!). Was called by the hospital at midnight to stay home because they had no beds and women were laboring in the hallway. I’m hoping my sister’s neighbor goes into spontaneous labor while she is waiting.

When it is hot out and the kids are in camp, mom and/or dad out of a job-hours cut-laid off, air-condition on, a little afternoon delight is cheap, until 9 months roll around and another tax deduction to feed.
