Subway, Birth Fresh!

Posted by realityrounds on June 12, 2009

New York City was all a flutter when a woman delivered her baby on the subway train.  All the media reports centered on the train conductor who saved the day by “delivering” the baby for the mom.  Yes, that’s right.  The young mom writhing in pain on the floor of a subway car, had nothing to do with the delivery of her own baby.  Cracks me up that the conductor spent 7 minutes with the woman before the baby just “slid out” into her hands, and she gets all the props and credit…..sigh.

On a side note, Conon O’Brien made a funny about this situation.  He stated that  according to the subway passengers,  the birth of the baby on the subway car floor was only the third grossest thing that happened on the subway that day.  Hee, hee.

Giving birth on a subway??? No thanks. I prefer my own home.

Anyway, that always drives me CRAZY! When people ask me who delivered my baby I always answer that I did. I labored. I dilated. I pushed. I caught. I nursed. The midwife observed beautifully though. :-D

That’s why I always prefer the term “Caught” because it leaves more credit where it’s generally due.

Alltough it’s emblematic of our culture’s misunderstanding of birth. That the baby catcher is the hero and the mother is passive having something done to her, not doing something herself.

    • How true is that. I think I mentioned this before, but I attended a delivery where the woman was in a coma on a ventilator. The baby delivered vaginally. Her body just pushed the baby out with each contraction. It one of the most amazing births I’ve seen.

I once accidently came up on a guy in the subway in NYC taking a poop on the platform! Huge man squatting down pooping. Welcome to NY!
