Mom-a-Thon 2009: Witnessing Your First Birth

Posted by realityrounds on May 15, 2009

This charming birth story came in from Reality Rounds reader, Micki Metoyer.  Most women never witness a baby being born in real life, (TV does not count!).  Micki was fortunate enough to be there when her mother gave birth to her brother.  Talk about the circle of life.  Here is her story of witnessing her first birth:

“Minds are like parachutes – they only function when open” – Thomas Dewar

I was 15 years old and my Mom was pregnant with my little brother. My Step-dad from the beginning was adamant that he would be in the room but by my Mom’s head. I thought he was a wimp.  So I talked to my Mom and we decided that I was old enough to be present. Wow – was I in for an emotional rollercoaster. I couldn’t tell you how long, how many centimeters all I knew was that my Mom was in pain. I truly thought she had morphed into a demon. I had never heard her talk like that in my whole life. She asked for an epidural so many times I think I lost count. Her OBGYN refused. He said “You can do it; you really don’t have that much longer.” If I was older I probably would have found someone else for her but being so young I had no idea. After many curse words and the crazy devil voice she finally progressed to the pushing stage. I walked down to the edge of the bed and I could see my little brothers’ head of hair just about to pop out. I was excited and terrified all at the same time. A few minutes later my 9lb 5oz brother was born. It was so amazing to see the miracle of life that my Mom worked so hard to make. He was beautiful. My step-dad during all of this was plastered against the wall, white as a ghost. Now looking back it was quite hysterical. He didn’t even want to cut the cord – so I did. It was an amazing moment; getting to cut the very thing that kept my brother alive in my Mom’s tummy. My Mom had me at 16 so we’ve kind of grown up together and for many of the years prior I had been her Mom. But that day I was so proud of her for being so courageous, brave and strong. She did an amazing job!! Later that night I was staying at a relative’s house, I just sat down on the bed and cried my heart out. It was so overwhelming but I feel blessed that I was part of that miraculous event.

  1. I just want to add – following my brothers birth – he literally was too large for her to birth vaginally. Her bladder and colon collapsed and she had to have a partial hysterectomy. It was still beautiful and she was amazingly strong.
