Mom-a-Thon 2009: Post 6 : Regarding Cord Blood Donation

Posted by realityrounds on May 6, 2009

Two great comments were sent my way for Mom-a-Thon about the importance of cord blood donation.  It is quick, painless, and easy, yet a fraction of the population take advantage of it.  Please read the enlightening comments below, and then click the link at the end that discusses the practicalities of cord blood donation.

“I think this is such a great idea. Although I don’t have a mommy story per say, however I do believe that what I have to say is important and related enough to this category that I can sneak it in there.
How many of you have heard about donating your cord blood? I must admit I was unaware of the practice until my nephew who has leukemia received cord blood as part of his treatment. And let me tell you he is doing incredible. So if you can help someone with something that would get tossed out anyways why not? Many hospitals do not have the proper equipment to accompany such practice yet but I think this may be leading us towards a cure, or at least we are on the right path. So I ask all you expecting and expecting to expect to keep this in mind. Mention it at your next check and maybe you can kick start the donations in your area. Thanks RR for letting me type your eyes off.”

“I didn’t know about donating cord blood with my first born but did with my second. It was so easy! The hospital gave me the information for the organization (may vary by state?) to contact. They sent me the consent forms and kit. I signed the forms and put the kit in my overnight bag. Once we were at the hospital, I made sure to tell the nurses and attending physician about the kit. They took care of the rest. I too would highly recommend this practice to expecting moms! Thanks for the reminder Katie!”   From Reader:   Therese
