Coming Full Circle: Doctors Suing Patients.

Posted by realityrounds on March 7, 2009

In a previous post, we wrote about the The Realities of Rating Doctors.  We discussed websites such as Zagat’s posting patients on line reviews of their doctors.  In a new twist, their is a current lawsuit of a doctor ( a chiropractor actually), suing a patient for a bad on line review.  Kevin MD. The results of this lawsuit will be interesting.  Will it allow doctors to sue all patients who review them negatively?  Will it force the review websites to disallow anonymous reviews from patients?

We will put our suit of armor on as this topic is discussed.

Realities of Stem Cell Research: It’s Complicated

Posted by realityrounds on March 7, 2009

Stem cell research is back in the national conversation.  President Barack Obama will be announcing a decision to reverse an eight year ban on funding embryonic stem cell research imposed by the Bush administration.  MSNBC

History Lesson:  Under President George W. Bush, taxpayer money for that research was limited to a small number of stem cell lines that were created before Aug. 9, 2001, lines that in many cases had some drawbacks that limited their potential usability.

Research did not stop on embryonic stem cell research, most of it was just privately financed.  Progress was also made on adult stem cell research.

With Obama lifting the ban, it means tax payer money can again be used for research on embryonic stem cells.

If you recall, embryonic stem cells are a line of cells that can be manipulated to grow into any type of cell in the human body.  They can, for example, be used to grow spinal cord cells, which can then be transplanted into a paralyzed patient so they can move again.  It is hoped that many diseases such as cancer, paralysis, parkinsons, diabetes, alzheimer’s etc, can be treated or cured with this research.

It is controversial because those on the right believe it is killing a human life for scientific gain.  Those on the left believe it is scientific and humane progress.

I am going to post two links regarding embryonic stem cell research which I hope both sides of the issue will read.  Read both links, then post (polite) comments on the issue if you wish.

Let the debate begin!

Link for Lefties:  STEM CELLS

Link for Righties:  Stem Cells
